Follow the incas

You will inevitably pass by the way of the Incas if you do several days of trekking in these mountains.

We know that it is an Inca road because there is one near Santa Cruz in Samaipata. The Incas used to live in Bolivia, Peru in Colombia and parts of Chile and Ecuador. It is part of one of the largest Inca roads. The route was used by the Incas, but also by the various peoples living in the area, for trade and barter. This path is a representation of the original that existed before. Some of the stones date back to that time, but not all of them.

It is also called the mountain of Los Frailes, the mountain of the monks. The monks used to live here during the colonization. The route was intended to send messages to Santa Cruz and/or La Paz.

These messengers are called the Chasquis, they would send and carry messages from one place to another, that’s how they communicated. This road, after the Incas period, was also used for trade. The inhabitants of Uyuni, Uyuni being further south, produced and still produce salt. Two types of businesses developed at that time on this path: salt sales and barter, the inhabitants exchanged salt for food and/or other products.

Along the way you can come across several medicinal plants such as the Muña, the Eucalyptus and the Qewina. The bark of this tree was used by messengers to write and leave messages in a language that the Spaniards did not understand and could not decipher.

This allowed the chasquis to communicate while hiding. We also meet the Phoenix tree, it has a burnt appearance due to the sun and is used to make fire. When he dies, a flower lives again like the Phoenix.

Here’s the paper tree on your left. Look at the bark as it has a beautiful color! At the touch you will see that the bark is removed very easily.
