3 days around Chaabt
Near Fez, if you want to escape into the middle of the Atlas I recommend you contact Said, a local Berber guide who will make you discover the wonders of the Atlas!
Day 1
This trek starts from a house where Said’s family will welcome you! You can take a bus from Fez that will take you close to the house, it is best to contact Said to find out which buses to take exactly, which change over time certainly. Not far from the hut, a classroom has just been built and if you have books in French, don’t hesitate to give them to the children of the village, as they learn French with their teacher. To start this trek you will leave the house quite early in the direction of Lokchebt, where you will sleep at night, at the guest house. You will surely be entitled to a couscous with mint tea for dinner.
At noon, you will have a picnic in the middle of the Atlas Desert and taste the dishes Said has prepared for you. The best thing is to get to the Gorge hut the night before to spend the night with Said’s family and sleep there so you can start the walk the next day. If you go there in winter, you’ll be able to admire the contrast between the red of the mountains and the white of the Red Valley snow. It takes about 7 hours of walking for the first day.
Day 2
To start the day you will have a nice breakfast with the locals and then you will start walking. You will pass through Chaos de Souk n’Sarah before arriving at Soft at Mohamed Olouch’s house to sleep. It is best to have sleeping bags, because although blankets are lent, in winter it is very cold at night.
Day 3
For this last day you will walk up the Testaouine Mountain before returning to Said's house and then take the bus to your next destination.
